Endings and New Beginnings…

Endings and New Beginnings…

August 24, 2013 Challenges Reflection Thought for the Day 0

24th August 2013….no trip to India….no daily blogs…no questions about our passage…no stepping out of our comfort zone…WAIT! Ignore that last one. It’s the end of August which means for many people new challenges ahead. What with A-level results, GCSE results and a new academic year a lot of us are having to once again step outside of our comfort zone with a new challenge or new beginning. Many people struggle with changes so my blog this month are some reflections on how to manage change and make it positive and hopefully less stressful.

Firstly, people often forget that endings come alongside a new beginning. It is common to be scared of a stage in our life coming to an end. We are losing some of our control, we go from the known to the unknown. When a change happens, something is left behind… lost. Something has ended. It is natural for some resistance and maybe even a little denial. However, it is important to acknowledge that the old has ended… whether you wanted it to or not. So celebrate the good and learn from any mistakes. It is time to close that chapter and start a new one…Chapters in life

Now new beginnings can happen. But wait…here comes the fear, the discomfort, the chaos! It can sometimes be very overwhelming.  So how can we cope with this change?

1) Be open and flexible.  Routines won’t be in place straight away. Most of the time you won’t even be able to predict a change in routine so be open to accept it and adjust when it occurs.

2) Keep positive and smile. I know this is hard but concentrate on the good things and don’t dwell on the negative. If you have a positive attitude it can even make the negatives look a little bit more rosy!

3) Remember you are unique with your own special talents and interests. Ensure you build self-esteem and encourage others to feel good about themselves too.

4) Ensure you have supportive relationships. Surround yourself with friends and family, believe it or not, they are proven to reduce stress levels!

5) Take control of your life. Take charge of your thoughts and actions and you will respond to change in a much better way.
