Change… we all go through it, whether it is the transition from one school to another, to a new home, to a new job or new responsibilities.

As a year 6 teacher, at this time of year I see first hand the differing reactions to change. I have pupils who are eager for the change and display excitement and expectation whilst others are reluctant to change and become quite ‘clingy’ to the familiar, leading to children who don’t want to leave my side… which if you know me, you will know how much I hate this. Then there are the tears……argh I definitely don’t do tears! Some people thrive through change and transition whilst others experience great difficultly. Part of my job is to assist the children through this transition and help them gain skills in which to cope and adapt the way in which they react to change. A useful strategy I use with my year 6’s is the 5 “P’s”.

1.Patience. Generally, feelings won’t change overnight. It will take a while for you to settle into the new situation. We have to be patient and let ourselves have that adjustment period.

2.Persistence. It’s easy to want to give up, especially when things are not going your way, or it is not going how it was expected to go. Keep on going, looking for solutions, overcoming those barriers.

3.Be practical. There is no point sitting around expecting the change to happen around you – you need to actively take part in it. If you want the transition or change to be good, you need to be involved in it.

4.Be positive. Expect the “ups” and “downs”. In fact, that’s more the norm while you’re going through change. A sense of optimism will help keep you focused.

5.Purpose. No matter how many major changes and transitions you go through during the course of your life, there is a reason for it. Keep your eyes on the goal.


Currently, Chennai Challenge is going through a transition period which sees us not travelling to India this year but instead using our time to focus on the growth of the charity. This is a big change especially for Isaac who has been going to India for the last 10 years or so. Last year, I remember how difficult it was for Cathy and Rob to watch a team go out to India without them. Cathy especially struggled with this… it was a rollercoaster of emotions for her. This year I am sure Isaac will also experience the same emotional rollercoaster however my advice here is to keep focussed on why there is this change and turn it into positive, practical energy. For myself, even though it is strange knowing I will not be in India in August, I am looking forward to the First50 event next week, where team members from the last 6 years will meet and share their involvement with the charity and they will be able to see and get involved in the changes which are taking place. Here at Chennai Challenge, we aim to grow as a charity and as individuals, enabling us to then move onto helping others grow and then in turn they will pass this growth on to many, many more people. To put this metaphorically, we are in a race, passing on the baton for change and growth within ourselves and others, this in turn will enable us to make a difference in the lives of others handing them the baton to pass on.

My challenge to you is to embrace your next change. Use the 5 p’s to adapt your reaction to experience a different transition experience.

    Thank you Emma – I’m not there yet, but this summer will certainly be a challenge. This is really encouraging and helpful though! Can’t wait for the Frist50 this Saturday!
